Namaste!

Google presents a new robot tag, indexifembedded, which gives you more control over when your content is indexed. With the indexifembedded tag, you can tell Google that you want your content to be indexed when embedded in iframes and similar HTML tags on other pages, even when the content page has the noindex tag.

The indexifembedded tag addresses a common problem that particularly affects media publishers: although they may want their content to be indexed when embedded in third-party pages, they don’t necessarily want their media pages to be indexed on their own. Because I don’t want media pages to be indexed, I’m currently using a noindex tag on media pages. However, the noindex tag also prevents content from being embedded in other pages during indexing.

How indexifembedded works

The new robots tag, indexifembedded, only works in combination with the noindex tag when the indexless page is embedded in another page using an iframe or similar HTML tag, such as the object. For example, if podcast.host.example/playpage?podcast=12345 has the noindex tag and the indexifembedded tag, it means that Google can insert the content hosted on that page into recipe.site.example/my-recipes.html during indexing.

To allow your content to be indexed only when embedded on other pages, make sure to add indexifembedded in combination with the noindex tag. E.g:
